Sustainable water management. Challenges and good practices in Albania, Montenegro and Italy

Conference in Tirana-Albania organised by Tirana Water and Sewerage Utility related to the project CrossWater+, also financed by the Interreg Programme Italy-Albania-Montenegro.
This conference represents the third event of the Crosswater + to be held at the Xheko Imperial Hotel in Tirana Albania on 31st of July 2024.
Sustainable water management is essential for ensuring access to clean water for all, long- term availability of water while protecting the environment. This means that water is used in a way that is equitable, efficient, and sustainable.
The challenges of water management are complex and interconnected, and they have significant consequences for both human and environmental well-being.
Climate change is one of the most significant challenges facing water management. The effects of climate change on water resources are complex and include changes in rainfall patterns, increased frequency and severity of droughts and floods, and changes in the timing and duration of snow melt. These changes are putting enormous pressure on water resources and making it increasingly challenging to meet the growing demand for water.
Population growth and urbanisation are also major challenges to water management. As the population continues to grow, so does the demand for water. Urbanisation, which is happening at an unprecedented rate, is leading to increased demand for water in urban areas, where most of the world's population lives. This demand inputting a significant strain on water resources, leading to water scarcity, and exacerbating water pollution problems.
Technology is also a critical component of sustainable water management. Advances in technology, such as in water treatment, help to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of water management practices. Technology can also help to reduce water loss from leaks, improve water quality, and reduce the energy consumption associated with water management practices.
These are some of the challenges that will be addressed during the conference together with best practices and solutions to be illustrated by representatives of the three water utilities from Albania, Italy and Montenegro. We expect a significant contribution from stakeholders such as academia and national agency on water resource management focusing the discussion around sustainability and environment with the final goal of preserving water resources for future generations and protecting the environment.
